    Wow, quote the mini-documentary. I mean I *knew* Detroit was bad (and VERY Muslim BTW), but I had no idea it was *that* bad! And Crowder's point is well taken as there are many "rust-belt" cities that have similar stories, yet are still in better shape than Detroit. I know the few times I've drive through, I'm *always* made sure to drive *around* it -- but once I got lost and was driving down a very dangerous street and just never stopped my car; not for any intersection, not for nothing -- was too scared and definitely did NOT want to pull over and pull out my map -- I'd have been a sitting duck.

    I recently read a report that said that much of Detroit is not really a city anymore. Great swathes of the city have been abandoned and are being overtaken by nature. Maybe that is the best that can be done for the city. Once a city is so stuck in decline, it is extremely hard to turn it around. With such low high school graduation rates, it won't be done without importing people with higher skills; many of those people, like you, would probably not jump at the chance to make an extra $500 a month to live there. In the current American economy, there isn't really room for that many people without a high school diploma.

    As far as attracting highly skilled labour, I doubt that it will happen without a miracle. I had an interview at a business school in March. I was chatting with one the Marketing Manager for the school and some of their current MBA students. The talk turned to one programme that enables students to spend time consulting in a developing country. One of the guys cracked, "I was so happy they didn't send me to Detroit."
